BUILDING CLASSES

ACMC offers classes & workshops related to maritime subjects. These classes are offered to ACMC members & the general public in our effort to provide maritime education to the community. Students come from Skagit County and elsewhere such as Anacortes, Bellingham, La Conner, Mt. Vernon, Port Townsend, Arlington, and Seattle.
Classes are held in Winter or early Spring -- before the boating season begins. Class sizes are limited to ensure a low teacher-to-student ratio; however, five or more students are needed to begin a class. Register early.
NOTE : Due to the success of the Lofting The Full Boat class, we are consider offering it again in the Spring. Please go to ACMC Blog for a short review of this class.
Lofting The Full Boat. Instructor Vernon Lauridsen. Meets Monday & Tuesday, November 28th - 29th from 6 - 8 pm Location - Salvation Army of Anacortes, 301 R Avenue, Anacortes, WA.
This class covers the Interpretation of "Lines Drawing" and Lofting Lines Full Size from the Table of Offsets. This is a fundamental skill the amateur boat builder needs to review if they wish to build a model or small boat.
The goal of this two day class is four-fold:
- Know the terms used to discribe a line drawings & table of offsets
- Know how to loft a vessel full size from a set of scaled lines & offsets
- Know how to create a set of scaled line drawings from a vessel
- Know how the lofting process is used in making a half-model or full boat model
- Conceptually understand the process of building a boat from a set of line drawings & offset points.

STUDY GROUP: Introduction to Small Boats, Traditional Small Craft, and Boat Building -Monday 5 - 8 pm., February 20, 2012. Two sessions & field trip to CWB - Cama Beach.
Small boats are everwhere. We use them for fishing, crabing, rowing, and sailing. We put them on top of our car or the back of our pick-ups, we pull them behind our larger boats, we see small boats on the dock or in the water. The GOAL of this class is to carefully review the large number of small boats available to purchase, build from a kit, or build in your garage or backyard. If necessary, an additional evening will be added to schedule to be sure materal is covered adequately.

- Definition of small boat or traditional small craft
- Small or traditonal boats you can build yourself
- Kit boats, designers, traditional plans, materials, etc.
- Different building & construction mehods
- Boat building web sites
LEAD PERSON: Lyndon Greene. This class is FREE. It also includes a field trip to the CWB - Cama Beach. Minimum class - 5 people. Register early.

Building The El Toro Small Sailing Boat. Lead (s)Lyndon Greene & Owen Huffaker. Monday, February 27th 5 - 7 pm. Location - Emerald Marine Carpentry, 307 30th St., Anacortes, WA.
ACMC's boat building effort this year is to build an El Toro sailboat. The goal of this class is to encourage the amateur boat builder or El Toro sailor to build an El Toro themselves. Sailors who wish to start a El Toro fleet locally are also encouraged to attend this class.
Class covers:
- Review of the El Toro boat & construction process
- Material list to determine costs, supplies, plywood, etc.
- Set-up building jig, patterns, schedule, etc.
- Build a paint ready hull, rudder, & mast
- Make sails
The class will meet in the evening & Saturday based on the number of students. Note, cold weather is also a consideration because this class will be held at Emerald Marine Carpentry. Dress warm!
